Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid to persons who may require a helping hand with washing or preparing meals. The types of service offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, medication reminders, supervision of self-administered medications, and emergency response systems. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: disaster procedures, residents’ need and service plans, infection control, and neglect prevention. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and medication administration.
