In granting awards, A Place for Mom relies solely on resident and family reviews. While A Place for Mom indicates whether reviews have been verified, A Place for Mom does not physically inspect the facilities as part of the awards process review. Families should conduct independent research when deciding whether a community is the best place for their loved one, including licensing status, violations or citations issued by regulators, and historic information.

A Place for Mom offers a wealth of resources on evaluating and selecting the right facility. However, it is important that you still ask a lot of questions.

Senior living communities are ineligible for Best of Senior Living awards, despite positive family reviews, unless their state licenses have remained in good standing for 12 months preceding the award period.

Senior living communities are also ineligible for Best of Senior Living awards if, during the 12 months preceding the award period, they have been cited by state regulators for specific violations, including:

    • Substantiated instances of abuse
    • Substantiated instances of neglect
    • Citations involving fines or other disciplinary actions as issued by state regulatory bodies
    • Citations where there is evidence of a resident experiencing severe bodily harm due to unreasonable deviation from procedures designed to safeguard and promote a resident’s well-being.

If a senior living community has changed ownership during the 12 months preceding the award period, only the period under new ownership will be considered for eligibility.
