Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer healthcare, supervision, and recreational activities to persons who are around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, continuing care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, emergency response systems, supervision of self-administered medications, and non-medical services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, observing the resident, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include promotion of dignity, philosophy and goals, disaster procedures, and infection control. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
