Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides care, supervision, and aid to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities commonly offer opportunities for leisurely activity, help with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, non-medical services, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, medication reminders, and observing the resident. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These include: choice, hygiene, neglect prevention, and job responsibilities and limitations. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, A comprehensive assessment, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
