Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide oversight, healthcare, and recreational activities to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer help with daily activities, supervision of care, and assistance with transit and appointments. In certain instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing the resident, medication administration, and reading the medication label to residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: philosophy and goals, residents’ need and service plans, privacy, and self-determination. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, emergency response systems, non-medical services, and assistance with activities of daily living. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition.
