An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, supervision, and support to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently offer chances for leisurely activity, care supervision, and support with the activities of daily life. In select instances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or dementia care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, medication management, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, and guidance. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include first-aid, supervision, safety and fire prevention, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, medication supervision and administration, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative.
