An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and assistance to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Services provided often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . The state of Michigan maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, medication management, supervised personal care, and guidance. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include safety and fire prevention, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, first-aid, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
