Assisted living communities provide regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. Services provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Michigan has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, assisting a resident to keep appointments, guidance, and supervised personal care. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include personal care, first-aid, staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, and staff training program based on the home’s program statement. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and medication supervision and administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three daily meals and snacks must be provided, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21.
