Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care to people who require help with everyday activities such as dressing or bathing. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for recreational activity, supervision of care, and assistance with appointments and transportation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or continuing care. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses licenses this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: containment of infectious disease, reporting requirements and documentation, supervision, and residents rights and responsibilities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication management, supervised personal care, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, and assisting a resident to keep appointments. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan.
