An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, aid, and support to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. The services provided often include support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, dementia care, or respite. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . The state of Michigan maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include safety and fire prevention, administration of medication, standard precautions, and personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include guidance, medication management, assisting a resident to keep appointments, and supporting a resident’s personal and social needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided.
