Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, care, and oversight to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, aid with daily activities, and aid with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, continuing care, or skilled nursing. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include containment of infectious disease, administration of medication, supervision, and residents rights and responsibilities. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication management, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and guidance.
