Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, outings for leisurely activity, and support with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Michigan maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisting a resident to keep appointments, medication management, guidance, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: standard precautions, staff training program based on the home’s program statement, containment of infectious disease, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans.
