Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, assistance, and support to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. The services offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, skilled nursing, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, assistance with activities of daily living, laundry, and housekeeping. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These include: residents’ need and service plans, promotion of dignity, philosophy and goals, and internal policies. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, observing the resident, and supervision of self-administered medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
