An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, care, and support to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually provide opportunities for social activity, assistance with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. In select instances, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific rules associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include security, laundry, supervision of self-administered medications, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, medication reminders, and observing the resident. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These areas include reporting, abuse, hygiene, and residents’ need and service plans. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
