Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer personal care, social opportunities, and oversight to persons who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer chances for recreational activity, help with transportation and appointments, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing, or hospice. The state of Texas has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, supervision or direct administration of medications, and personal care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include food and nutrition services, assisted living standards, basic principles of management, and skills for working with residents.
