Assisted living communities offer residential communities and assistance for seniors who might need support with things such as cooking food or dressing. Services offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, nursing care, or dementia care. Texas has specific standards related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and a comprehensive assessment . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, assisting residents with taking medications, and residents may self-administer their own medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, general supervision or oversight, personal care, and activity and/or social program for residents. Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include basic emergency first-aid, community resources, basic principles of management, and federal laws. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
