What is assisted living?

Assisted living is long-term care for seniors who are generally active and independent, but who require increased supervision and help with some daily tasks. Staff can assist residents with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, and medication management. Assisted living is also a good option for seniors seeking more socialization. • Help with personal care
  • Laundry
  • Social activities and outings
  • 24-hour emergency response

Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized assistance. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with daily activities, outings for social activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. Texas has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These include: skills for working with residents, financial management, resident assessment, and abuse/neglect. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision or direct administration of medications. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
