Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, supervision, and care to people who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with appointments and transit, aid with the activities of daily life, and chances for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or “aging in place”. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire has specific regulations related to this kind of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration certifies this community type. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include infection control, residents’ rights, emergency/evacuation procedures, and limitations on/correct use of restraints. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social/recreational activities, personal care, emergency response, and supervision of residents with cognitive deficits. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-direct administration of medications, staff may place containers within reach, and staff may observe and record medication side effects. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, provide snacks between meals and before bed, provide three or more meals a day, and all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents.
