Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care for persons who require support with things such as washing or mobility. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, aid with the activities of daily life, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain situations, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or skilled nursing care. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire has specific statutes related to this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the community may remind residents to take medication, staff may not physically handle the medication, and staff may observe and record medication side effects. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: aging, residents’ rights, characteristics of residents’ disabilities, and resident plan of care. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, social/recreational activities, health/safety services, and emergency response. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three or more meals a day, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment.
