Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide supervision, social events, and care to people who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, help with transit and appointments, and opportunities for leisurely activity. In some situations, communities may provide skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or dementia care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $10,494 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $9,581 . The state of New Hampshire has specific standards related to this kind of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: duties/responsibilities, aging, basic hygiene, and emergency/evacuation procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, medication services, personal care, and assistance arranging medical/dental appointments. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may not physically handle the medication, staff may observe and record medication side effects, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents.
