Assisted living communities provide supervision, social events, and care to people who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide care supervision, help with transit and appointments, and opportunities for leisurely activity. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: duties/responsibilities, aging, basic hygiene, and emergency/evacuation procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, medication services, personal care, and assistance arranging medical/dental appointments. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may not physically handle the medication, staff may observe and record medication side effects, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents.
