Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individualized care. The types of service provided often involve help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or respite. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire has specific statutes associated with this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration regulates this community type. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, emergency response, health/safety services, and supervision of residents with cognitive deficits. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, provide snacks between meals and before bed, and staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may place containers within reach, staff may observe and record medication side effects, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include dental care, emergency/evacuation procedures, nutrition, and duties/responsibilities.
