An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, supervision, and care to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. Services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, dementia care, or respite. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . New Hampshire maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, provide three or more meals a day, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may place containers within reach, residents may self-direct administration of medications, and the community may remind residents to take medication. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include resident plan of care, first aid, residents’ rights, and dementia. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, crisis intervention, health/safety services, and medication services.
