An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides assistance, care, and support to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications, and medication supervision and administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission, service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care, service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, and The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, guidance, medication management, and assisting a resident to keep appointments.
