Assisted living communities provide residential communities and assistance to seniors who may need support with things such as washing or preparing meals. Assisted living communities often offer support with daily activities, help with transportation and appointments, and outings for social activity. In some situations, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition. Staff are required to receive training in a number of areas. These include: infection control, promotion of dignity, internal policies, and confidentiality. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, medication administration, and documenting whether or not the resident took the medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, emergency response systems, non-medical services, and supervision of self-administered medications. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room.
