Assisted living communities administer oversight, recreational activities, and care to people who are around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing care, or continuing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, and reading the medication label to residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These include: hygiene, job responsibilities and limitations, residents’ need and service plans, and resident rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication reminders, assistance with activities of daily living, supervision of self-administered medications, and security. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, A comprehensive assessment, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition.
