Assisted living communities offer social interaction, supervision, and personal care to persons around 65 years old. The services provided often include help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, supervision of self-administered medications, non-medical services, and medication reminders. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and documenting whether or not the resident took the medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, A comprehensive assessment, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: promotion of dignity, internal policies, philosophy and goals, and independence.
