Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual assistance. The types of service offered often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In certain cases, communities may provide dementia care, skilled nursing, or continuing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include privacy, neglect prevention, disaster procedures, and job responsibilities and limitations. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, reading the medication label to residents, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, supervision of self-administered medications, medication reminders, and medication administration.
