Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers supervision, care, and aid to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often offer help with appointments and transit, opportunities for recreational activity, and care supervision. In select cases, communities may offer skilled nursing care, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, medication reminders, emergency response systems, and housekeeping. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: independence, confidentiality, infection control, and promotion of dignity. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, medication reminders, and reading the medication label to residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
