An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers support, care, and supervision to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and A comprehensive assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, medication administration, and observing the resident. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, housekeeping, medication reminders, and non-medical services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include philosophy and goals, resident rights, hygiene, and abuse. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
