Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social interaction, oversight, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide chances for leisurely activity, support with the activities of daily life, and assistance with transit and appointments. In some instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or hospice. Texas has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include resident characteristics (including dementia), financial management, federal laws, and basic emergency first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, assisting residents with taking medications, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time.
