Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, personal care, and oversight to people who are about 65 years old. The services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer nursing, dementia care, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this type of community. Staff members obtain education in a number of areas. These include: neglect prevention, internal policies, disaster procedures, and independence. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, assistance with activities of daily living, medication reminders, and emergency response systems. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, and observing the resident.
