Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, outings for recreational activity, and aid with daily activities. In some instances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or Alzheimer’s care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and A comprehensive assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, laundry, supervision of self-administered medications, and medication reminders. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, and reading the medication label to residents. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include infection control, confidentiality, disaster procedures, and hygiene.
