Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide supervision, personal care, and social interaction to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, continuing care, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, whether family supports are available, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , assisting residents with self-administration, and applying topical medications. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: attendance policies, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, reporting requirements, and 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide.
