Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, care, and oversight to individuals who are on average 65 years old. Services provided often involve support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, Residents’ rights, hand hygiene, and 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and assisted living care.
