Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer regular social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized assistance. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select instances, communities may provide hospice, nursing care, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific rules related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, emergency first-aid and CPR, proper food preparation, and including the special needs of residents with dementia. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and applying topical medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, whether family supports are available, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and described as personal services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
