Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, personal care, and oversight to people who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, aid with appointments and transit, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and assisted living care. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, attendance policies, reporting requirements, and emergency preparedness.
