Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and assistance to your loved one who need help with washing or mobility. Services offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, assisting residents with self-administration, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, whether family supports are available, and assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and assisted living care. Staff must receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, and proper food preparation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
