Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized assistance. Assisted living communities commonly provide supervision of care, outings for recreational activity, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing, or continuing care. The state of Texas has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this community type. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: federal laws, skills for working with residents, financial management, and resident characteristics (including dementia). This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision or direct administration of medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
