Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care to persons who might need a helping hand with things such as taking medication or cooking food. The services provided often involve assistance with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some situations, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or hospice. Ohio maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include community procedures, job responsibilities, residents rights, and securing emergency assistance. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, reminders, and handing medications to resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, and activities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medication review, psychical history, functional status assessment, and medical diagnoses.
