Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social events, supervision, and healthcare to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually provide opportunities for recreational activity, help with transportation and appointments, and help with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. Ohio has specific standards related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health supervises this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, activities, intermittent nursing services, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These include: job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, residents rights, and community procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychological history, functional status assessment, health history, and psychical history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, verifying labels, and handing medications to resident.
