Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, aid, and care to independent seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. The services offered often include aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer dementia care, nursing care, or respite. Ohio maintains specific rules related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance opening and taking medication, handing medications to resident, and assistance organizing medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, supervision, and activities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychological history, medication review, psychical history, and medical diagnoses. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include residents rights, securing emergency assistance, job responsibilities, and community procedures.
