An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and assistance to self-sufficient seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or hospice. The state of Ohio has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this community type. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include community procedures, job responsibilities, residents rights, and securing emergency assistance. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, supervision, activities, and assistance with self-administration of medication. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, observation, and handing medications to resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychical history, medical diagnoses, psychological history, and cognitive status review.
