Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social events as well as individual care. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with appointments and transportation, support with daily activities, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, skilled nursing care, or respite. Ohio maintains a number of provisions related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this type of community. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include job responsibilities, community procedures, securing emergency assistance, and residents rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medication review, cognitive status review, functional status assessment, and psychological history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, verifying labels, and handing medications to resident. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision, assistance with self-administration of medication, activities, and medication administration. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room.
