Assisted living communities provide oversight, recreational activities, and healthcare to persons around 65 years old. Assisted living communities commonly offer aid with the activities of daily life, aid with appointments and transportation, and outings for recreational activity. In some cases, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, “aging in place”, or hospice. The state of Ohio maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, assistance with self-administration of medication, intermittent nursing services, and medication administration. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These include: job responsibilities, residents rights, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include handing medications to resident, assistance opening and taking medication, and observation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, psychical history, psychological history, and functional status assessment. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room.
