Assisted living communities offer care, oversight, and social interaction to people around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Ohio maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medication, personal care, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, psychological history, functional status assessment, and health history. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include residents rights, job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include verifying labels, observation, and assistance opening and taking medication.
