Assisted living communities administer healthcare, social opportunities, and supervision to people around 65 years old. The types of service offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and observing the resident. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include housekeeping, supervision of self-administered medications, emergency response systems, and assistance with activities of daily living. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Staff members receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include abuse, neglect prevention, internal policies, and confidentiality. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition.
