A nursing home provides room and board to at least two seniors who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. This type of community provides its inhabitants with care by on-site nurses. These nurses provide care for those who are unable to adequately care for themselves because of their aging.

Nursing homes are required to provide a professionallly directed program of activities, routine personal hygiene items, specialized rehabilitative services (treatment for mental illness or intellectual disability), and medically-related social services to residents.
