Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid to persons who may need help with things such as self-administering medication or bathing. Assisted living communities often provide aid with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and help with transportation and appointments. In select situations, communities may offer dementia care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific rules related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These include: provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, emergency preparedness, general infection control principles, and 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, and described as personal services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and whether family supports are available. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
