Assisted living communities provide residential communities and health care to persons who may need a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or mobility. The types of service provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, skilled nursing, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, assisting with an Epi pen, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, and personal preferences relative to care needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and described as personal services. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include hand hygiene, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, and general infection control principles.
