Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers assistance, support, and care to medically stable individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently offer opportunities for leisurely activity, support with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include exploitation of a resident, identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, general infection control principles, and hand hygiene. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with storage of medications, and assisting with an Epi pen. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and assisted living care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments.
